THCP
The following information was compiled in October 2025 and is subject to change as new research is conducted and as new information becomes available:
Description: THCP is a semi-synthetic cannabinoid categorized as a phytocannabinoid and is structurally similar to other phytocannabinoids (e.g., THC, CBD, CBDP). THCP is present at trace amounts in Cannabis sativa; however, drug products purportedly containing synthetically derived THCP have been sold online and in smoke shops in the form of plant materials, edibles, and vapes.1-3 THCP was first identified by our laboratory in May 2025 and confirmed after acquiring standard reference material.
Sample Source: CHOP Pediatric Hospital of Medicine (Philadelphia, PA)
Sample Appearance: Edible/Gummy
Pharmacology: THCP is reported to have high affinity for the human CB1 and CB2 receptors [Ki = 1.2 nM (CB1), 6.2 nM (CB2)], and cannabimimetic activity higher than that of THC.1
Toxicology: THCP has not been detected in toxicology cases to date at the CFSRE.
Drug Materials: THCP has been detected in ten drug materials to date at the CFSRE.
Demographics / Geographics: The first drug material originated from Pennsylvania and THCP was identified without the presence of other drugs.
Legal Status: The legal status of THCP is currently ambiguous and evolving in the United States.
