Intern
Laell Sands is a junior at Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Chemistry with a minor in Forensic Science. Born and raised in Nassau, The Bahamas, Laell graduated from St. Augustine’s College as salutatorian. She is also a Bahamas National Merit Scholar and a Lincoln University International Student Scholar.
Laell has gained hands-on experience in toxicology through a research project at Lincoln University. Her research won first place in Lincoln University’s Annual Science Fair and was presented at the 2026 American Academy of Forensic Sciences’ Annual Conference. In addition to her research experience, Laell interned at the Center for Forensic Science Research and Education in the forensic toxicology discipline.
During this internship, she gained experience with various instruments such as ELISA, LC-MS, GC-MS, GC-FID, and QTOF. Furthermore, she performed drug extractions (liquid-liquid and solid phase), data analysis, and instrument maintenance using validated standard of operations.
Beyond academics, she is actively involved in student clubs and organizations that contribute to the betterment of the campus and surrounding community. Laell believes in helping others who cannot help themselves. This belief, along with her love of chemistry, sparked her interest in forensic science to give answers and closure to victims and their families. Laell aspires to become a forensic toxicologist, creating an overall safer community.
