Forensic Chemist I

Alexis QuinterMacenzie Powell, MSFS earned her Master’s in Forensic Science and Law from Duquesne University in 2024. Her graduate research focused on developing a novel method for detecting Kratom using leaf spray ionization mass spectrometry, which she presented at the American Academy of Forensic Sciences in February 2024.
During her studies, Macenzie gained diverse laboratory experience through internships in both microbiology and toxicology. At MTF Biologics, she performed microbiological testing on donor samples to determine their suitability for use in transplant grafts, reinforcing the connection between science and community health. At Northern Tier Research, she expanded her knowledge in toxicology by learning a variety of analytical methods and observing the collection of postmortem samples during autopsies.

After graduation, Macenzie joined the Center for Forensic Science Research and Education (CFSRE) as a Forensic Chemist on the Drug Chemistry team. Her work involves supporting projects in drug checking, sentinel, and toxic adulterant research. In addition to her casework, Macenzie contributes to CFSRE’s internship program, where she helps mentor students and foster their professional development in forensic science.
